Viktor Gyokeres thrived under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP. The Scandinavian striker has 97 goals to his name for the Lisbon club, with the lion’s share coming during Amorim’s tenure at the helm of the Portuguese powerhouse.

It is confirmed that Gyokeres is set to part ways with Sporting CP for a deal that would cost any potential buyer a fee in excess of £60 million. Premier League teams Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked with the Swedish international, while Juventus is being mentioned as a distant third contender. While the Gunners lack a proper goal scorer in the box, the underperforming Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have forced United to look for an alternative.

Most predict that Gyokeres will arrive at Old Trafford ahead of next season, especially with Amorim now managing the former English champions. After failing to secure a European slot due to their defeat against Tottenham in the Europa League final, Manchester United are undergoing a major squad overhaul—particularly in the attacking department. Despite having no European competition to lure top talents, the Red Devils have managed to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Bryan Mbeumo is also rumoured to be joining from Brentford, and Amorim reportedly intends to use both players alongside Gyokeres.

Arsenal over Manchester United?

However, Gyokeres reportedly sees Arsenal as a more suitable choice than Manchester United, despite Amorim’s presence at the latter, The Mirror said in a report. European football and a more settled dressing room are said to be key factors attracting the 27-year-old to London. The £60 million asking price is affordable for Mikel Arteta’s side, who are also linked to RB Leipzig’s Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko. The Mirror added that if Gyokeres senses Sesko is Arsenal’s priority, he may reconsider, as choosing Arsenal doesn’t mean he harbours any dislike for United.

Offloading Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho could enable United to offer a more convincing deal to Gyokeres, potentially positioning him as the undisputed lead striker at the club.

As things stand, fans will need to wait and see whether the Sporting CP forward will make his move before the new season kicks off.
